Good Morning, Islanders Country.
I said this was a “make or break” seven-game homestand for the Islanders.
That was an overstatement. After two listless losses, it could have broken them, and it almost did. However, even after winning their fourth straight game, it won’t make the season—it will prolong it.
The Isles are over an NHL .500 for the first time since Nov. 14 at 21-20-7 and no longer in last place in the Metro Divison. However, with multiple teams ahead of them in the standings, the Islanders face the daunting task of leapfrogging opponents when, on a nightly basis, teams are picking up points ahead of them.
It’s a strange position to be in as a fan.
You watched Saturday night and likely rose to your feet, pumped a fist, or slapped five with someone when Brock Nelson scored in OT. It’s natural to do so. Yet, the odds are stacked against the Islanders to make the playoffs and higher for a deep playoff run. Every win pushes the timeline to decide their future further away.
