Calamity of Errors
Islanders visit the Minnesota Wild with the Nashville loss still fresh in their minds
On Sunday’s episode of Hockey Night in New York, we're now past the halfway point of the Isles season, and it's been a mixed bag so far, with a lot to like and a lot to improve.
Sean and Stefen cover the latest string of games, including Saturday's brutal loss to Nashville, highlight some player grades, preview their upcoming tilt vs Winnipeg with Jets play-by-play man Dan Robertson, and lots, lots more!
Good Morning, Islanders Country.
Lane Lambert was visibly angry and annoyed when he met the media for the post-game on Saturday night, calling the final seconds of the gut-wrenching 3-1 loss to the Nashville Predators a “calamity of errors.”
I’ll swap out calamity with “comedy” because the confusion and ineptitude that led to that regulation loss is a dark hockey tragedy, and if you don’t laugh, you’ll cry. Do you remember when Lambert called the loss to San Jose a “sin?” This time, he said it was Matt Martin’s “cardinal sin” of trying to connect a pass down the middle of the ice when a simple clear would have secured a point.
We’ve entered the third cycle of a segment of the fanbase calling for Lambert’s job. There was the seven-game winless streak that ended in Western Canada, then the brutal regulation loss to NJ followed days later by blowing a three-goal third-period lead to the woeful Shares. Now, we’ve entered the next phase.

Fans are watching teams like the Edmonton Oilers (winners of 10 straight) turning their season after coaching change. They’re counting the number of points given away and see how close the Metro standings are and are starting to think the trend that wasn’t is now a permanent part of this team’s fabric under Lambert, and the only way to reverse things is a change behind the bench.
The schedule doesn’t get any easier, either. After losing in heartbreaking fashion in a place they never win, the Isles will be in Minnesota tonight against a struggling Wild team in a place they rarely win.
After playing much better under new head coach John Hynes, their slumping again and are winless in their last four. A matchup with the Central Division leading Winnipeg Jets follows, making two points all that more important.
