Sporting one of the greatest logos in minor league hockey history, the Kentucky Thoroughblades first took the ice at Rupp Arena in Lexington for the 1996-97 season.
The team's signature colors of teal, purple, and silver were unique in their own right, but the angry, muscular horse on skates really made their uniforms one of the most unique in all of pro sports.
Good Morning, Islanders Country.
For the second time in less than a week, the Islanders scored four goals at home against one of the better teams in the NHL, and for the second time, they lost.
In both games, Ilya Sorokin made “save of the year” type of stops but also allowed five goals for the second consecutive start as Lane Lambert’s team survived the first period to grab a 3-2 lead only to squander it with a sloppy 13 seconds late in the second period. It’s hard enough to beat teams with more skill; it’s nearly impossible when you make mistakes and mental errors that are in your control.
If this team isn’t going to be a disciplined, defensively sound team, it won’t matter how much we complain about the power play or the fourth-line minutes. The Isles have now allowed 121 shots in their last three games after allowing only 42 in their first two games. That’s simply asking too much of their goaltending.
“I don’t know if we need a system overhaul. I think we just need to clean it up,” said D Ryan Pulock after the game.
The frustrating thing is WHY should a team with a similar construct for several seasons need to “clean it up” so often? Pulock and Adam Pelech have to perform as a top pair on defense for this team to have success. Yes, they are logging heavy minutes with Scott Mayfield out, but the fact they’ve been a defensive liability is as surprising as it as it troubling moving forward.
