Good Morning, Islanders Country.
The Isles play their 41st game of the year tonight at UBS Arena, the halfway point of the 82-game regular season, a season that has been up, down, and all around like few others in recent memory. The first half of the season has been filled with highs and lows, reasons for optimism, and reasons to feel pessimistic.
They have outscored opponents 35-24 in the first period and have been outscored 56-43 in the third period and overtime. They have played 14 overtime games and have lost 10 of them.
They had a seven-game winless streak and had points in 17 of 19 games. They’re still tied for the most points (33) in the Eastern Conference record since Nov. 15 after just lost back-to-back games for the first time since Nov. 13.
Their powerplay has been good, but their penalty kill has been bad. They’re scoring more but allowing more goals. They’re more exciting but less predictable.
A lot has happened, and little has made sense, but you know what? After all that has transpired, the Islanders have 46 points in 40 games, the exact amount they had through 40 games last season.
2023-24 18-12-10 for 46 points in 40 games
2022-23 22-16-2 for 46 points in 40 games
Lane Lambert’s team has started 2024 1-2-1 and are 4-5-3 over their last 12. As they take on Toronto tonight, they’re in another lull and need to prevent it from becoming a slide or risk following the same January script from last season, one which saw them go 4-8-3 and fall out of playoff position.
