Holding Two Thoughts At Once
The fanbase is together on most things, but divided on others.
The trade deadline has come and gone in the midst of the Islanders limping through their California road trip. JG Pageau is sticking around, Brayden Schenn is a New York Islander, and Jonathan Drouin? We barely knew ye. Sean & Arthur hop on the mics to chat about the impact of the Isles big day and what it means for the team in the immediate and the future. Islanders play-by-play man Alan Fuehring also joins the discussion as the playoff push intensifies through March.
Good Morning, Islanders Country.
Sports debates tend to live in extremes. A move is either brilliant or disastrous. A trade is either a home run or a catastrophe. But sometimes — actually, a lot of the time — the truth lives somewhere in the middle.
And it’s okay for Islanders fans to sit there.
You can hold two thoughts at once.
You can believe that Brayden Schenn helps the Islanders push toward the playoffs. You can look at his résumé, his edge, his leadership, and understand exactly why a team chasing meaningful games in March and April would want him in the room.
And at the same time, you can look at the cost and feel your eyebrows raise a little.
Both things can be true.
Schenn brings plenty of intangibles. He’s played in big games. He understands the grind of a playoff race. He’s the type of player coaches trust when the game tightens. Those qualities don’t show up neatly in a stat line, but they matter.
But it’s also fair to notice the other part of the equation.
He’s a 34-year-old center with declining offensive production who is now committed for two more years. And when that player is penciled into a third-line role, the margin between “valuable depth” and “contract concern” becomes a narrow one.
Again — both thoughts can coexist.
