Good Morning, Islanders Country.
There was everything to love about the game last night except the score more than halfway through the second period. As good as the Isles were, things looked grim given how they weren’t able to break through against a backup rookie goaltender and then found themselves in a 2-0 hole to a tired Blues team.
Yet, the team maintained their mindset and their game until Kyle Palmieri broke through and then remained relentless the rest of the way. It was about as dominant a 4-2 game as you’ll see. The game was in doubt, but wasn’t close.
"I've been confident [since] the day I took the job. I will say this to you, that's the reason I came here. Because I like this team and I believe in this team, absolutely" - Patrick Roy
Per Natural Stat Trick, the Isles had 16 high-danger chances and allowed just four. Without the benefit of a power play, they outshot the Blues 33-21 with lopsided puck possession and offensive zone time numbers that made Patrick Roy proud.
The Isles played a stick-to-stick, north-to-south game with quick breakouts. Everything that Roy has been drilling into them. They’ve morphed into a team that is playing fast by passing the puck up the ice rather than skating it in. They even scored another empty net goal.
“It's been some ups and downs here, but it's all about finding your groove at the right time,” said Mathew Barzal before the game. “And seems like we're playing our best hockey right now.”
