Good Morning, Islanders Country.
Last night, I was listening to an interview with Mike Milbury on the Barstool Sports Podcast Spittin’ Chiclets. Whatever you think of Milbury or the hosts of the show, the segments dedicated to his dysfunctional tenure with the Islanders were a reminder of just how dire things were for this franchise 20-25 years ago and just how far they’ve come since.
We know it goes well beyond bad trades (of which there were many). There was a lack of commitment, funds, and knowledge from ownership to turn this franchise into a serious organization, let alone a serious contender for a Stanley Cup.
These aren’t the best of times for the franchise, but they are good times that maybe even become very good times before the season is over.
So with another day off before Friday night’s game versus Columbus, take a moment and think about Tuesday night. A sold-out crowd inside the league’s most state-of-the-art building, rooting on a team that ownership has fully invested in and a franchise that is serious about winning even if they’re not always playing like a serious contender. It’s a good time to be an Islanders fan.
Coming up, the captain is optimistic about Brock Nelson’s status, and Bo Horvat talks about his chemistry with an injured Mathew Barzal. Plus, an NHLPA poll picks which players you want in which situations; Matthew Maggio’s freakish strength at even strength and Mike Bossy crossing 60 goals yet again.
