Good Morning, Islanders Country.
“There are no apologies, there’s no excuses for them. These things happen.”
And they keep happening.
Those were the words of GM Lou Lamoriello on Wednesday morning before the latest lackluster Isles loss, a 2-1 defeat to the Ottawa Senators in which the Islanders - and stop us if you’ve heard this before - failed to convert on the power play (0 for 3) for the eighth straight game and didn’t score a third-period goal for a franchise record 11th straight game. Awful.
“Your goal scorers have to score. And during this drought, our goal scorers were not scoring. That’s the key,” said Lamoriello. Fans would question whether this team has any goal scorers to score given this abysmal stretch. The Isles have scored two or fewer goals in 12 of their last 14 games.
A vote of confidence for the coach. A reaffirmation of the belief in the players. A concession that the fanbase should be upset. It all rings hollow. The Islanders have lost the narrative - a narrative that has grown stale and has left fans searching for the smallest bits of positives to keep them clinging to fleeting hope.
