Good Morning, Islanders Country.
The New York Islanders control their destiny. I repeat, the New York Islanders control their destiny. As outlined succinctly and clearly by Joe Pantorno in amNewYork, after weeks of tracking the games in hand of trailing teams, the Islanders have reached a point where none of those teams can catch them by simply (or not so simply) winnings those games in hand. Exciting, right?
All the teams looking up at the Islanders are flawed (as are the Islanders), which is why they are on the outside of the playoff picture and why the models have recently given the Isles the edge even when the games in hand appeared daunting.
Thatβs the good news. The bad news is the recent slip-up against Washington, coupled with a pair of Penguins wins, means that Pittsburgh, the team ahead of them in the standings, is now two points ahead with two games in hand.
The difference between the 7th seed and facing the Boston Bruins, the fastest NHL team ever to reach 50 games, is massive, especially after the Carolina Hurricanes lost Andrei Svechnikov to a knee injury. It could even be the New Jersey Devils in the Metroβs top spot before the regular season ends.
With 14 games left to play, there's a lot to be decided, but the Islanders are in a position to decide for themselves if theyβll be part of the tournament come April.
Coming up, JG Pageau misses practice but could be back tonight, and Bo Horvat shows that he can do a lot more than score. Plus, the MSG crew stays out east, some forgettable moments over 50 years, and Shakira is an Isles fan?
