Good Morning, Islanders Country.
The Isles have been meeting my expectations as of late.
That’s because I no longer have any.
The Islanders have played 60 games, and I don’t have the faintest idea what we’ll see in the final 22. For three years, the Islanders, perhaps more so than any other team, had an identity. You could explain to someone who never watched hockey the type of style the team played, their strengths, weaknesses, and the attributes they brought to every game. Now? Who knows.
We’ve had the never-say-die comeback Isles, we’ve had the can’t score more the two-goal Isles, the blown third-period lead Isles, and now the undermanned inspired Isles. There’s nothing they could do that would surprise me other than play remarkably consistent hockey over the final quarter of the season and be on the upswing come the playoffs.
It’s a strange feeling, isn’t it? You’re watching these games wanting your team to win, but your enthusiasm is capped because your belief in what they can accomplish is measured. You’ve seen this group make the playoffs, you’ve seen them win rounds, and this doesn’t feel like that right now - at least not yet.
We’ll see if they can get us to expect something different.
