Good Morning, Islanders Country.
The final month of the NHL regular season is upon us, and tonight's game for the New York Islanders could be their last truly meaningful game.
They trail the sputtering Philadelphia Flyers by five points with two games in hand as they face off in Philly against John Tortorella’s surprising team that has been losing steam. The Flyers occupy the last Wild Card Spot with the Detroit Red Wings three up on the Isles, having played one more game.
It’s painful to think that the Islanders could’ve been in a position to back into the playoffs if they hadn’t thrown away points earlier in the year and given back all the good from their six-game winning streak. Instead, they’re going to have to play themselves into it, with very little margin of error left after losing 4-1 to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday night.
A win in Philly, followed by perceived “winnable” games against the Chicago Blackhawks and Columbus Blue Jackets, gives the Islanders a chance to make the rest of the week and perhaps the month meaningful.
