The Islanders had no business being in that game, let alone winning it.
Despite taking a two-goal into the third period and holding a lead with under three minutes left to play, you knew. You knew deep down in your blue and orange heart it wasn’t going to end well.
It was the first time in franchise history they lost a game when leading by three goals at any point. They had won the previous 81.
They were utterly dominated, so much so that as the buzzer sounded at the end of the second period, Brendan Burke said the Islanders were clinging to their two-goal lead …and there were another 20 minutes left to play.
The Isles had one shot in the third period and a total of five after the first 20 minutes. The Isles did not get a shot on goal until 13:22 was played; they had only one shot on goal in the final 34:57. It was as bad as that sounds.
“Pretty hard to avoid the conclusion that this game was an ass-kicking disguised as a comeback,” NY Post beat writer Ethan Sears posted after the game, accompanied by a set of lopsided advanced statistics.
