It's all over. The Islanders season ended in disappointing fashion by missing the playoffs and closing things out with some uninspired blowout losses. Sean and Stefen cover how it all came to an end and conduct a postmortem on the 2024-25 season. Jonny Lazarus of Daily Faceoff joins to talk Stanley Cup Playoffs and more!
Good Morning, Islanders Country.
Whether it’s through actions or words, it’s time we heard from New York Islanders ownership.
The New York Rangers just fired Peter Laviolette one season after a Presidents’ Trophy win. The Boston Bruins, two years removed from the best regular season in NHL history, issued a letter to fans stressing that expectations and accountability are higher than ever.
Meanwhile, the Islanders—after four straight seasons of mediocrity, including two playoff misses—have done and said nothing.
"Running it back" has run its course. Yet until we’re told otherwise, it appears ownership is content with a status quo that prioritizes not bottoming out over building a true Stanley Cup contender.
Another clean-out day came and went without a word from GM Lou Lamoriello or head coach Patrick Roy. No media availability. No update. No direction. We don’t even know where either of them currently stands within the organization—because ownership won’t say.
Back in 2018, Jon Ledecky sat awkwardly between Doug Weight and Garth Snow during what’s now remembered as a bizarre but quintessentially Islanders press conference. On that day, Ledecky acknowledged that he and co-owner Scott Malkin had “failed” the fans and were “evaluating all aspects of hockey operations.” It wasn’t perfect. We didn’t know if Weight or Snow were on the way out. But at least it was something.
Seven years later, following the team’s worst season since that one, there are rumblings that Malkin—the majority owner—is becoming more involved. There are also more minority owners now, perhaps bringing a wider range of opinions on the franchise’s future.
Fans, the media, and ownership can disagree on what the next move should be—but what’s not up for debate is that this moment demands decisiveness.
Let’s hope ownership provides it, whatever the answer may be.
