Good Morning, Islanders Country.
Remember all those “must-wins” that were declared across social media over the last six months? Well, this time, it’s the real thing.
The season could end tonight.
I didn’t think that was likely after Game 3, but as Sunday showed us, the way you feel entering a game is not always an accurate indication of how you will feel afterward. The Isles surprised us with their undisciplined play in Game 4 and now have to surprise us and send the series back to Long Island for a Game 6.
Could they do it? Yes, but outside the 2020 bubble vs. TB, when they were only technically playing Game 5 on the road, the Isles haven’t been able to send a series back home when down 3-1 in their last four tries.
They’ve mostly gone out with a whimper.
If that happens, it would be more disappointing than Game 4, given the way the veterans talk about wanting to “win together” after all the years and playoff games they’ve played as a group. You’d expect their best effort, but will we get it?
This has been a season where whenever you start to feel good about the Islanders, they let you down, and whenever you want to give up on them, they give you a reason to “beLIeve” (or hope and pray) that their best hockey is in front of them.
Is tonight the time things go as expected? For the Isles sake, I hope not.
