Good Morning, Islanders Country.
This team is trying to get you to believe, aren’t they?
Despite the bad losses to bad teams and losing Mathew Barzal to injury, if you take a step back, you’ll see the Isles now have points in 9 of their last 11 games (7-2-2). That’s 16 of a possible 22. That’s pretty damn good.
When teams face adversity, there’s always talk about players needing to step up, and then there’s actually seeing it happen night after night. The Isles won a game last night with goals from Sebastian Aho and Simon Holmstrom. That’s right, I said Sebastian Aho and Simon Holmstrom. Aho scored his fifth goal of the season, and Holmstrom scored his fourth.
Winning a game behind with the two Swedes being the goal scorers is as unlikely as Matt Martin playing on the first line and earning an assist on the game-winning goal for the second straight game.
But that’s precisely what happened.
It’s eye-opening 👀
The game wasn’t easy or pretty; it didn’t carry the same juice or emotion of either of the Pittsburgh wins, and the team looked outmatched during the second period. But nevertheless, they found a way to win by playing a close-checking, tight game and were very good with the lead in the final minutes of the third period.
It also doesn’t hurt when you’re goaltender is Ilya Sorokin, who allowed one goal or less for the 38th time in his short NHL career (when playing at least one period).
