Those watching Saturday’s Islanders-Rangers game without an allegiance were thinking how exhilarating a best-of-seven series between these two teams would be. For those of us with rooting interests, we were thinking about how we would possibly survive watching it.
It’s been 30 long years since the Isles and Blueshirts battled in the post-season, and perhaps that’s a good thing, as a series resembling the action from Saturday would likely take 30 years off our hockey fan lives.
Yes, the Islanders technically blew another third-period lead, but their lead-leading 16th loser point secured in the 3-2 shootout loss has them in position to clinch a playoff spot tonight without any help from the out-of-town scoreboard.
“We can't be disappointed with it. Every point matters here down the stretch. It's obviously very tight within the division and within the wild card, so it's a big point today on the road against a great hockey team,” Anders Lee said after the game. “The extra point could have gone either way in a shootout or overtime.”
A few weeks ago, the Islanders’ playoff chance looked as unlikely as they had all season. They snapped a six-game winless streak against the Winnipeg Jets only to get shut out the next day by tonight’s opponent, the New Jersey Devils. They followed up a win in Florida with a loss in Tampa Bay.
